The Obligatory First Post

Hi there! My name is Aaron Tyler and I'm an app and web developer living in Sydney, Australia. I'm also interested in design, audio, video, and music production. I created this blog to share my knowledge and opinions on the things that interest me, whilst also showcasing my creations.

Why tylxr.com?

Put simply, I wanted a short .com domain, and tyler.com was already taken. I thought having the X in there looked cool, and tylxr.com was born. Oh, and if you were wondering, it's pronounced ty-liks-er. Mock me on twitter (@aarontyler) if you must.

The Platform

I've decided to build this blog on a relatively new blogging platform called Ghost. It's an open source blogging platform built on top of node.js with a focus on simple, elegant design. So far I'm loving it! I'm serving the blog using nginx on a Digital Ocean droplet, running Ubuntu 14.04. Once I have a better handle on the best configuration for me, I'll share it right here.

What to expect

I'm planning on making this blog a useful resource for developers, an inspiration for creatives, and a journal for the world. So that means you'll see bits of code here, original music there, with photos, opinions, and some UI/UX design thrown in for good measure. At least, that's the plan. This is my first real go at writing a real blog, so it'll be an evolving process. Kind of exciting I think.

Not only will the content be evolving, but so will the functionality of the blog. As I learn more about Ghost and node.js, I'll be implementing some new features which may include:

  • Disqus
  • A newsletter
  • Server monitoring
  • CDN for larger assets
  • Site registration (will be optional forever)
  • Donation (if traffic increases my costs)
  • Integrations to other services

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure it'll change a bit as time goes on. Well, I think that about does it for my first post. But I do need to test images for my design, so here's a photo of a beautiful sunset I took from my apartment balcony:
